Fear Not: Fear is Brewing.
“Drink in the Fear that you feared most,
and you shall overcome that fear.”
I was teh-tareking with the Queen, AstroGal, Tuna and Youzi the other day when the all-knowing Queen broke the news about a pending lawsuit that may threaten all of us bloggers who have somethings to say and are not afraid to say it in our blogs.
Web-logs (commonly known as “blogs”) are personal accounts of what we feel and serve as records of fragments of our lives. It is not something as public as a newspaper and the blogger doesn’t profit from what they write; in other words, if you don’t like what somebody writes on his/her blog, don’t read it.
Unless, of course, what somebody writes about you is totally false and you are compelled to take legal actions against the person simply because the person is lying through his/her teeth to defame you — regardless of the fact that perhaps, the blog is only read by a handful of 3 persons (the blogger and his buddies).
I have read a blogger who did not hesitate to claim that Kuala Lumpur Sucks (read about it here and here) in her very popular blog and was writing about issues and topics that provoked and insulted, and she became a celebrity of sort in the tiny former British colonial island Singapore.
So, it was okay for the Gahmen to allow Wendy a.k.a. XiaXue to argue that women should have orgasms as early as they can but not allow bloggers to touch the topic of politics too much:
“An orgasm is so beautiful because of so many reasons. It is the most powerful (or maybe sensational) form of love, it is also mostly rare for women (Bloody selfish men!), and it is one thing that has almost no bad side effects! Most of the time it is free too.”
Now, I have always enjoyed reading bloggers such as XiaXua (because Everyone’s Reading It), MrBrown and the somewhat vulgar (but damn funny and must read in Ah Beng accent) Talk Rock by Rockson:
“Mr Brown is one of us. Got family, got job and got bill to pay. This is the kind of Singapore gahmen we have, even the small people, they also whack. If can happen to him this kind of nice family man, it can happen to you also.
I listen to his his podcast about be a Singaporean, I want to cry liao.
His wife also got do, I hear already I cry even more!!!
This is two Singaporean who love Singapore!
How can the gahmen whack simple people like them?
Fuck their mothercheebye!”
So, the rule of the game is, stay the fuck out of the Gahmen’s way and you are fine, is that it?
NO, I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT SINGAPORE.
I am talking about Malaysia.
Online Chinese news portal Merdeka Review broke the story on January 12th, 2007 about the danger of being sued if you write against the grains of the current administration.
“I can sue you for libel if you told someone you didn’t like my face,” I remember one of us were saying.
Are we supposed to be afraid?
Malaysian bloggers Jeff Ooi of Screenshots, Ahirudin bin Attan of Rocky Bru and Sheih of Kick de Fella, who produced a series of movie posters featuring our beloved leader of the country were given legal notices to remove posts on their blogs that made some people angry.
“How’s everything?” I asked Jeff last Sunday when we met for brunch at a coffee shop near our homes.
“Everything’s fine,” he said, not knowing that I have already known about the news. He looked composed, and calm, as always.
But should we be shitting in our pants?
Of course not! I think this is the time we stand together, more than ever — forgive your fellow blogger who may have written something bad about you — and join hands to support the Malaysian blogging community.
We shall not let fear consume us.
This is why I have just plastered a new avatar courtesy of Sheih on my sidebar in support of the cause to keep our voices free on the Internet.
We shall overcome that fear.
